From Clinician to Educator: How the Tacazon Triangle™ Makes the Transition Smoother
There's an increasing need for Respiratory Therapy instructors, and if you're thinking about making the transition, it can feel overwhelming at first.
When I first started teaching, I developed what eventually became the Tacazon Triangle™ — a simple but powerful system that helped guide my students through the challenges of passing their boards. Over time, I realized that these same principles apply to instructors as well.
Each side of the Triangle — Knowledge, Confidence, and Test-Taking Strategies — isn't just for students. They're vital for instructors who want to build strong, supportive, and successful learning environments.
Knowledge
You'll be teaching from foundational texts like Egan's Fundamentals of Respiratory Care (often referred to as the "Bible" of Respiratory). Every concept you teach should always be anchored back to your primary source material, whether it’s Egan's or another standard book your college adopts. Staying consistent with the textbook keeps your lessons credible and prepares your students for board-level expectations.Test-Taking Strategies
Start assessing your students early — even from their first quiz. Use timed, multiple-choice quizzes (mirroring the board exam format) and observe how they perform under pressure. After quizzes, review answers together and show them strategies like eliminating wrong choices and choosing a "letter of the day" when they're unsure. This real-time coaching builds smart, board-ready test-takers over time.Confidence
Confidence isn't just built from lectures—it’s forged through engagement. Host review sessions before exams, using tools like Jeopardy-style games or Kahoot quizzes that students can interact with on their phones. Provide study guides to focus students’ energy and reinforce key concepts. When students feel prepared, their confidence skyrockets.Transitioning into teaching isn’t just about changing roles — it’s about evolving your impact.
And the Tacazon Triangle™ can help you make that jump smoother, stronger, and more rewarding. If you're considering taking the next step into education, you're needed—and you're ready.
